If you’re familiar with Fascia Blasting you know that it goes hand in hand with cellulite. Mainly it’s risen to the scene as a popular option for non-surgical treatment in reducing the appearance of cellulite.
Medically termed gynoid lipodystrophy, cellulite happens when parts of the skin are pulled down by fibrous connective bands, which attach the skin to muscle. The skin becomes dimpled as fat cells collect between the bands. You can read a detailed explanation of this effect here. It is a normal, highly prevalent physical attribute, which occurs in an estimated 80-98% of women, and a much smaller percentage of men. More than 85% of women older than 21 years of age have cellulite.
With so many cure-alls marketed to women it’s important to know that much of how cellulite forms is counterintuitive. When it comes to science we’re shown it’s only loosely related to weight, and as for why some women have cellulite on their arms and stomach while others only get it on their butt and thighs? Genetics may play a prominent role. Since we have little control of our genetic makeup we encourage clients to first focus on developing a well rounded self-care practice to support the health of their body long term.
We decided to offer Fascia Blasting, aka cellulite removal, as a treatment at Halcyon Bodyworks, not only for the cosmetic benefits of the practice, but also the value in supporting a healthy fascia connective tissue as we would any other muscle or tissue.
With this in mind, our goal is to give you a balanced perspective of this bodywork tool, with a focus on holistic wellness and actual functionality.
What is Fascia?
Fascia is a continuous layer of connective tissue that covers all your muscles, bones, organs, and nerves. It’s mostly made of collagen, and it helps to give form to your body.
The continuous nature of fascia helps your body parts move. Fascia attaches, encloses, and separates muscles and other internal organs, allowing these structures to slide and move through the body.
Healthy fascia is pliable, but with age, injury, or lifestyle choices the tissue can get stiff and form adhesions that doctors have long suspected can contribute to muscle pain, nerve issues, poor mobility and pain. Over time a tight fascia begins to trap fat, adding inches, and preventing definition and causing not only cellulite, but sagging skin. This most often appears on the thighs, hips and buttocks.
What is Fascia Blasting?
Fascia blasting is a term that coincides with the use of a FasciaBlaster, a tool created by best-selling author and fascia pioneer, Ashley Black. The FasciaBlaster is a plastic wand with claw-like attachments used to rub over target areas.
Black, who spent 12 years treating pro athletes, including Brett Favre and Derek Jeter, was originally interested in muscle recovery. While working with foam-rolling, also known as self-myofascial release, she developed the FaciaBlaster to help break up adhesions by digging deeper into tissue.
Evidence of cellulite reduction with the use of the FasciaBlaster started to emerge as a byproduct of the treatment and use of this massage wand exploded in the beauty and weight-loss industry.

What Does It Feel Like?
Think of it as a super-charged deep tissue massage. Fascia blasting is hands-on manipulation that works to loosen tissue, increasing blood flow and releasing fat cells so they can be eliminated naturally.
Our treatment alternates fascial tissue work using a combination of body oil, FacialBlaster Collection tools, hot towels and therapeutic massage.
Please note that like a deep tissue massage this treatment can be painful at times when first starting out. Some clients see bruising. Treatment tends to be less painful as the fascia health improves. It’s recommended to lightly massage your skin and drink plenty of fluids after the procedure. You can also take a cold shower to reduce any swelling.
